‘Tuck Pointing’

It’s a key part of masonry.  Tuck pointing is the technical term for filling in the gaps between the bricks.

Ash mortar was a popular material many years ago, and aging and extreme weather conditions in Chicago make it brittle and, therefore, very easy to scrape or blow away.

There is a very simple technique to repair this type of damage for Benchmark. We assess how deep to scrape the extra old mortar and determine how much to leave in to preserve the integrity (and safety) of each structure.

Just like making the right cement mix for concrete work, mortar for tuck pointing needs to be mixed and colored to match the old material as much as possible.
